The calculation method for the weight of dyed fabrics (worth to learn)

The weight of fabric refers to the quality of the fabric in a unit area under the condition of a fixed moisture regain.

There are two general units of measure: grams per square meter (GSM) and ounces per square yard (OZ).
The weight of the fabric can be very intuitive to reflect the thickness of the fabric and the season. Calculating fabric weight is a basic skill that practitioners must possess.
According to international standards, the standard weight of a fabric can be obtained only after a complex formula is derived under the condition of a fixed moisture regain. Today I introduce to you an easy way to calculate the weight of fabrics. This formula is very simple, and the feature is to remember fast, calculate fast, and result in small deviations.
Before introducing formulas, please remember the following constants or conversion formulas. These constants are very important for the following formulas.
1) One constant: 23.5
2) Formula for converting filament D to British S: 5315/D = S
3) ounces per square yard (OZ) * 33.9 = grams per square meter (GSM)
4) Spandex core-spun spandex elastic yarn can be neglected when calculating grammage. For example, 40S+40D can be calculated according to 40S.
5) The elastic yarn in spandex elastic filament is calculated according to 33.3% when calculating grammage. For example, 40D+20D nylon elastic filament converted into British support is 5315/(40D+20D/3)=113.9S
The formula for calculating grammage is as follows:
Gram Weight (GSM) = (Warp Density / Yarn Count + Weft Density / Number of Fills) * 23.5
We follow the above formula to illustrate:
Example one: 100% cotton 40S*40S/120*80 57/58"
Weight = (120/40 +80/40) * 23.5 ≈ 117GSM
Example 2: 100% Cotton 40S+40S*32S/2/110*50 57/58"
Weight = (110/40 +50/16) * 23.5 ≈ 138GSM
*Remarks: 32S/2 strands can be directly converted into 16S single yarn.
Example 3: CVC (60/40) 32*32/110*70 57/58"
Weight = (110/32 +70/32) * 23.5 ≈ 132GSM
Example 4: Cotton/Polyester/Spandex 50*75D+40D/140*88 57/58"
Weight = (140/50 +88/60.2) * 23.5 ≈ 100GSM
*Remarks: 75D+40D is converted into English unit = 5315/(75D+40D/3)=60.2S
Example 5: Cotton/Spandex 50*50+40D/140*88 57/58"
Weight = (140/50 +88/50) * 23.5 ≈ 107GSM
*Remark: Spandex elastic yarn in 50+40D is ignored when calculating gram weight.
These are some of my personal experience in calculating the weight of fabrics. I hope that I can bring some help to my friends who have just entered the industry. Thank you!
