The latest discovery: Antarctica may have a diamond source (Figure)

According to foreign media reports, an Australian-led research team recently published a kimberlite deposit in the Meredith Peak in the Prince Charles Mountains in East Antarctica. Kimberly rock was first discovered in the town of Kimberley, South Africa in the 19th century. This ore usually contains diamonds, and the diamond mining in the area has continued since then.

In addition, the kimberlite ore deposit is evidence of plate drift. According to plate drift, the East Pole in the Mesozoic was part of the Gondwana continent, and in the ancient times, Africa and India, which belonged to this supercontinent, did find the Kimberley rock formation.

Experts have full confidence in the final discovery of diamonds. The leader of the study, Greg Yaxley of the Australian National University, said that the fact that diamonds are not included in the kimberlite is very rare. However, it is still too early for this discovery to cause the Antarctic diamond fever. Some geologists do not consider the commercial value of this discovery. According to Muir Riley of the British Antarctic Survey, only 10% of the sedimentary layer is less economically maneuverable: “From discovery to mining, there is still a long distance between them.” In addition, the Antarctic Treaty is also blocked on this continent.

Among them, the environmental protection agreement signed in 1991 expressly prohibited all mining-related activities. National gold, platinum, copper, iron and coal veins have been discovered on the Antarctic continent. At the northern end of the world, large diamond mines have been mined in Canada and Siberia. As the Chinese diamond jewellery market continues to expand in the future, the demand for diamonds in the future is likely to exceed its output. The large diamond mine that was discovered last time was Zimbabwe’s Murrow mine belonging to the Rio Tinto Group, and that was already in 1997.

The Antarctic Treaty System currently has 50 member states, but many of the superpowers such as China and the United States cannot be underestimated. Apart from protection, these countries are even more concerned about the possible future of Antarctica. The time limit of the Antarctic Treaty is currently extended to 2041. With the continuous depletion of resources in other parts of the world and the continuous advancement of technology, the future of the Antarctic continent is still shrouded in the fog.
